Electric vs. Coolant-Fed Skid Steer Cab Heaters

A heater can make winter work easier, but the right setup depends on the machine. For compact equipment, the first decision is usually between a small electric heater and a coolant-fed heater with an electric fan. They solve different problems and require very different installations.
Electric or coolant-fed: which heater fits the job?
A 12-volt electric heater is the simpler option. SSC's compact ceramic model connects to a capable 12-volt circuit and provides 300 watts of supplemental heat. It is a reasonable choice when you want direct airflow, some windshield help, or added comfort without opening the engine cooling system.
A coolant-fed heater uses hot engine coolant to warm air pushed through the cab by a 12-volt fan. It takes more planning and installation work, but it is the stronger candidate when steady cab heat is the priority and the machine has a compatible water-cooled system.

Option 1: a 300-watt 12-volt heater and fan
The 12 Volt Cab Heater and Fan connects directly to the battery with the included 15-foot, 12-gauge cord. The unit has heat and fan modes, a swivel base, and a 300-watt heater.
Before ordering, confirm that the machine has a 12-volt electrical system, a safe mounting location, a protected cable path, and the circuit capacity required by the owner's guide. This heater is supplemental. It should not be presented as a replacement for a factory hydronic heater in a large or poorly sealed cab.
Option 2: a coolant-fed cab heater
The Eterra coolant-fed cab heater draws heat from the machine's cooling system and uses a three-speed 12-volt fan to move warm air. The machine must be water-cooled. It is not intended for oil-cooled equipment.
Installation requires a fused power lead, a proper ground, a secure mounting location, coolant supply and return hoses, compatible fittings, enough hose movement for cab service, and correct bleeding of the cooling system. This is a mechanical and electrical job. Use a qualified shop or dealer if you are not equipped to modify the cooling system safely.
The optional Eterra heater installation kit includes common SAE fittings, hose, shutoff valves, clamps, and mounting hardware. It is not a metric fitting kit, so check the machine before adding it.
Cab condition matters too
Even a correctly installed heater will struggle in an open or poorly sealed cab. Inspect the door, side panels, rear window, and seals before choosing a heater. If the machine is still open, start with the applicable skid steer cab enclosure and confirm what is included for the exact model.
Questions to answer before buying
- Is the machine 12 volt?
- Is the engine water-cooled or oil-cooled?
- Does the electrical system have the required circuit capacity?
- Where can the heater be mounted without blocking controls or service access?
- Can power cables and coolant hoses be routed away from heat, abrasion, pinch points, and moving cab structure?
- Does the coolant connection use SAE or metric threads?
- Is supplemental spot heat enough, or do you need sustained whole-cab heat?
The practical recommendation
Choose the electric unit when simple installation and supplemental airflow matter most, and the machine can support the required 12-volt load. Consider the coolant-fed unit when stronger cab heat is the goal and the machine's cooling system, fitting type, mounting space, and installation resources all check out.
